From the back cover
Marting Lings's life of Muhammad [sal Allahu 'alayhi waSalam] is unlike any other. Based on Arabic sources of the eigth and ninth centuries, of which some important passages are translated here for the first time, it owes the freshness and directness of its approach to the words of the men and women who heard the Prophet [sal Allahu'alayh waSalam] speak and witnessed the events of his life.

Martin Lings has an unusual gift for the narrative. He has adopted a style which is at once extremely readable and reflects both the simplicitiy and grandeur of the story. The result is a book which will be read with equal enjoyment by those already familiar with Muhammad's [sal Allahu 'alayhi waSalam] life and those coming to it for the first time.

Martin Lings whose Muslim name is Abu Bakar Siraj al-Din took an English degree at Oxford and later lectured at Cairo University, mainly on Shakespeare, for twelve years. In 1952 he had returned to England and took a degree in Arabic at London Universtiy. From 1970-3 he was Keeper of the Oriental anuscripts at the British Musesum, where since 1955 he had been in special charge of the Arabic manuscripts. From 1974-6 he acted as consultant to the World of Islam Festival Trust and was also a member of the Arts Council Committee for their exhibitiion 'The Arts of Islam'. In 1977 he went to Mecca at the invitation of Kind Abd al-Aziz Univeristy to participate in the Conference on Islamic Education.
